SIMPLIFIED – LEVOTHYROXINE (SYNTHROID)

In this episode, I discuss a medication known as levothyroxine (Synthroid).

Hey everybody welcome back to drug talk my name is garrett campbell in today’s video we’re going to be doing a more simplified version of a video that we covered in the past on levothyroxine or synthroid and we’re starting right now just keep in mind that this channel is for information purposes only the first thing to discuss in this presentation is what this

Medication is used for so levothyroxine treats hypothyroidism an enlarged thyroid gland and thyroid cancer we’ll now discuss how to use levothyroxine so first off take your medication as directed your dose may need to change several times to find what works best for you and you may need to take this medication for four to eight weeks before your symptoms start

To feel better take this medication on an empty stomach at least 30 to 60 minutes before eating breakfast if you are giving this medication to a baby or a child who cannot swallow the whole tablet crush and mix it with one or two teaspoons of water do not mix with anything except water now what happens if you miss a dose so take a dose as soon as you remember

But if it is almost time for your next dose wait until then and take a regular dose do not take extra medication to make up for a misdose tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding or if you have kidney disease liver disease heart or blood vessel disease anemia blood clotting problems diabetes osteoporosis pituitary gland problems or adrenal gland

Problems also tell your doctor if you have recently received radiation treatment with iodine continuing on with warnings this medication may cause the following problems so heart problems including chest pain or heart rhythm problems as well as low bone density this medication should not be used to treat obesity or as a part of treatment plan for weight control

Programs do not stop using this medication suddenly your doctor will need to slowly decrease your dose before you stop it your doctor will do regular lab tests so be sure to keep all your appointments over the next couple slides we’ll discuss side effects or adverse reactions over the first two slides if you experience any of these you would want to reach out to

Your physician right away so maybe an allergic reaction which could present as itching or hives swelling in your face or hands swelling or tingling in your mouth or throat chest tightness or trouble breathing if you experience chest pain that may spread trouble breathing or unusual sweating or fainting if you have confusion swelling of the face tongue or lower

Legs feeling cold unusual tiredness or weakness reach out to a physician if you have dizziness lightheadedness or stomach pain fast pounding or uneven heartbeat seizures or tremors a severe headache blurred or double vision or nausea and vomiting in children or walking with a limp or knee or hip pain again in children for these side effects here you just want

To mention them at your next appointment with your physician or you can even talk to your pharmacist the next time you pick up a prescription so it could be appetite or weight changes changes in your menstrual periods diarrhea hair loss muscle spasm or weakness nervousness sensitivity to heat or trouble sleeping all right everybody that’s all we’re going to talk
